SJ May 2016 , Captain cook: charting our islands
Cook charted the islands by using a running survey. He sailed close to shore using a compass readings prominent landmarks. He also used Latitude & longitude by using something called a quadrant to measure the angle between the horizon and the sun.Longitude was much more difficult to work out because it was based on time. Cook had to work out the time in Greenwich by making long series of calculations, using observations and the lunar tables. He also used a rope to measure the depths of the sea. Cook and his crew took observations of the sun, moon an the stars which helped him calculate the HMS Endeavours exact position in the world. He also used a compass to find out the different landmarks. This information allowed him to plot a image of the coastline. Maths was important to cook because it would be more easier to calculate his maths.
